The family called ComForcare for help following the death of their father. Up until his death, the father had lived with their mother and cared for her. The couple had three adult children who lived out of state and were unaware of how severe their mother’s dementia was until their father passed away. The mother was still verbally competent, but would become confused often and her mind spent more time in the past than the present. Consequently, the father had been doing much more than anyone knew to care for their mother.
To help the family during this difficult time, ComForcare provided around-the-clock care for the mother for two months, giving the children time to attend to the funeral arrangements for their father and determine the best way to provide for their mother’s long-term care. During these months, ComForcare took the mother to her doctor’s appointments, hair appointments, and assisted her with laundry and cleaning. They also helped her with grocery shopping, and attended to her personal hygiene needs including bathing and dressing. Furthermore, her home care provideralso helped her through the stress of losing her husband, and spent time sharing stories and looking at pictures from her past to help reorient her.
ComForcare was also able to provide ongoing feedback to the three children during this period. Home care services from ComForcaregave the children the peace of mind they needed to manage their own grief and move forward taking their time to find the best place for their mother to live. Eventually, the mother moved out of state to be near one of her children. In the end, this allowed the family to make the best decision for their situation and to grieve and look without feeling as pressured for time or concerned for their mother’s present well-being.
